Speaking Your Client’s Love Language: Words of Affirmation

When it comes to creating the kind of business that thrives, there’s a symbiotic relationship with your client that must be nurtured each step of the way.

According to Gary Chapman, the author of The Five Love Languages, there are five primary ways to communicate love that leave a person feeling seen, important and appreciated. It happens through acts of service, words of affirmation, quality time, physical touch and gifts.

In this article, we’re going to deep dive into the love language of Words of Affirmation.

When’s the last time you received unsolicited acknowledgement of a job well done? If it’s been awhile, take a moment and just hear that you’re doing a great job of reading this article!

More often than not, our clients are focused on the work at hand, and there isn’t much space for reflection about the process they’re making or their accomplishments before moving on to the next thing.

This is where you can come in as their partner. You can point out milestones in your projects together. You can make sure that they understand when things are a big deal that they might miss because you’re the expert in that area, and they’re not.

You can encourage them to stay the course when immediate results aren’t possible, and they need to feel like their efforts aren’t wasted.

You can express these words through an email or a handwritten card. The main thing is that you leave them with something tangible, in their hand, that they can look back on and reflect. It gives them a reminder of why they chose you, out of everyone, to work with.

Not sure what to say? Here are a few prompts to get you started:

[NAME], I was thinking of you, and our work together, and I just wanted to stop and let you know that I am really excited about….

[NAME], can you believe it? We are halfway through our work together. I thought it would be a great time to look back on what we’ve accomplished…

[NAME], when it comes to [FILL IN THE BLANK], you are a leader, and I’m proud of the way you keep showing up.

The main thing is to be specific because clients with words of affirmation as their love language appreciate the details. They like to know the why behind the words, and it’s an easy way to build trust and rapport because they know that they are appreciated.
